The History Behind Dr. Who & Its Audios

by Felix on November 29, 2009

Just about everyone in countries like the UK, USA, Canada, New Zeeland & Australia etc should have at the very least heard of the world famous Sci-Fi TV serial DW from the BBC! Thanks to the resurrection of the series in 2005 following a 15yr stop, Doctor Who is as popular as ever with shows being shown on the international sci-fi channel and even on US TV channels in addition to the BBC’s broadcasts.

Doctor Who all began in November 1963 when it’s 1st episode aired on TV taking the Doctor and his comrades back into the past where they aided some cavemen to use fire for the first time. Taking into account the totally new serial Doctor Who is currently the longest running Science fiction show of all time! The second longest running Science fiction serial is Star Trek which started back in nineteen sixty thee, but does not at this moment have any new episodes in production.

During the mid 70s the BBC expanded DW into the audio median producing the 1st Doctor Who Audio. In the beginning the BBC solely made soundtracks from the original series & then had the Drs of the time add some binding narration to unify the dialog for the listener. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book episodes only for Audio release.

To add to this the BBC began producing radio episodes, again with past Doctors who had played in the serial, these episodes were also made available in Audio Book format. Also a lot of of the lost stories have been re done by their original Drs in the Audiobook format making them once more available to the public once more. Currently the BBC’s Dr. Who Audiobook collection has over fifty titles all available in quality Digital format at a reduced download price! The range spans all the way though the first Doctor right up until the present Doctor, David Tennant. Additionally Torchwood Audio and Sarah Jane Audio Books have also been added in recent times.

In today’s world audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming everyday more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audio sales for both Doctor Who and in general have augmented. Also an important factor about audio titles is that they are very often narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience. They are also a good choice for long car rides, especially with children as there’s nothing like a good Dr. Who show to keep them busy.

With the Doctor Who New serial going from strength to strength and more and more Audio Books being produced available both from the old & new series & now from Torchwood & The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like Doctor Who and DW Audios are here to stay for some time to come!
