A travel agent who gives advice on travel arrangements influences the choice of a travel destination, transport, accommodation and tours. College entry will only be possible for those who have graduated from high school. The course of study to becoming a graduate travel agent will take four years. A travel agent will need to grasp the details of reservation systems which are the basis for travel. The training will touch on travel destinations, cruise lines and culture which are travel basics. A successful travel agent must be equipped with skills in sales and marketing as well as in computer science. In the following paragraphs, I will attempt to explain how to become a travel agent.

A Business management course will be best for those who want to start their own travel agencies. A travel agent must be a person who is passionate and enthusiastic about travel. A travel agent must be one who has a wide knowledge on travel destinations and loves to work with people. Computer literacy is highly advocated for in this field since travel work is computerized. Information on latest attractions and destinations, processing of travel documents as well as making of reservations is done through computers. To be successful in the tours and travel industry, agents must portray excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Excellent sales and marketing skills are ideal for this kind of job. A keen eye to detail, organization and accuracy are requirements for travel agents. Perseverance of long working hours and pressure will be needed in this job. To increase their chances of getting hired, people must qualify highly and get relevant experience. Reception and reservations are the first departments travel agents will work in. Through training, people will get promotions to travel agents and managerial positions. Self employment is everyone’s dream and with the gathered experience this is possible.
