A USB Wireless adapter or a wireless NIC are necessary in order to see that the laptop connects to a wireless network. These adapters are very small kind of radio transmitters or receivers that is capable of sending and receiving radio signals.

The three main type’s adapters available in Wi-Fi:

  1. PCMCIA cards
  2. Wireless NICs
  3. USB Wireless adapters or USB WiFi adapters.

These days’ computers and laptops come integrated with wireless adapter chips.  Most of the adapters support a wired or wireless standard that is Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The USB Wi-Fi adapters are quite small and they can easily connect to the laptop by means of a USB port.

The USB Wi-Fi is advantageous as it can be swapped between laptops or desktops quite easily.

The USB wireless adapters are again of two kinds.

  1. The Compact model. This is very flexible for travelers.
  2. The Basic model for use at home or office.

These adapters do not require power supply from an external source as they get power for functioning from the computer they are connected to. The antenna of the wireless adapter can be adjusted in order to receive the reception of Wi-Fi signals.

These adapters are very reliable and easy to use for those who want to set up a network that is simple and their small size being an advantage and an attractive choice in terms of the functions.  A perfect situation where you would want to purchase one of these is if you’ve decided against purchasing any of the laptops for students that are available and have instead decided to bring your desktop computer to school with you.

Wireless network users are very cautious and most of them prefer buying one particular brand of adapter in order to match the router they should connect. For such cases, manufacturers now come up with the adapter and router as a package for a home network.

When not in use, it is always good to disable the wireless network adapters for the security reasons. The adapter’s software provided this capability.
