When it comes to home-cooked family meals, nothing can quite compare to the taste of a roast chicken. When done properly the skin is crispy on the outside while the meat inside is teaming with juice and flavour. If you are looking to roast a whole chicken for your next dinner, there are some simple tips to keep in mind. Roasting a chicken is much more than a matter of putting a piece of meat in an oven to cook. It takes time, preparation, and a little bit of love to make the perfect chicken that your whole family will drool over.
Your first step will be to buy a chicken in your local supermarket. Luckily chickens suitable for roasting will be clearly marked and some of them will even come pre-flavoured. But in order to put your own personal spin on the chicken, it’s always best to get a regular one to which you can add your own flavour later on. A chicken will be naturally tasty, but all great foods need to be properly seasoned. So make sure to add salt and pepper, and use a marinade combination of herbs, spices, vegetables and whichever liquid you prefer. If you have time, let the chicken sit in the marinade overnight so that it has a chance to absorb all the great flavour.
When it’s time to cook, you want to make sure to preheat an electric oven to the right temperature. Or if you are using a new halogen oven then you can turn it on and begin cooking almost immediately. While a chicken is roasting, you don’t want to open the oven door too often or you risk letting all the heat out. If you want to baste your chicken then do it once or twice towards the ends of the cooking process. And when it’s done, make sure to let the chicken sit for about ten minutes so that the juices have a chance to settle. As you can see, roasting a chicken takes a certain degree of patience, but the payoff is a great tasting meal that everyone will love.
