Make Your Very Own Homemade Maple Ice Cream!

by Flemin on January 8, 2010

Maple syrup has got to be one of the greatest inventions ever made in the culinary world. And for sure, everyone would agree that the same thing goes for ice cream. So it is really not surprising that people tried to combine the two together. And as expected, the result is amazing! Imagine the sweet taste of pure Canadian maple sugar combined with the cold, rich and smooth goodness of ice cream. The good news for the fans of both maple syrup and ice cream, making your own maple ice cream at home is quite easy provided you have the right maple sugar recipes!

For the ingredients, you might have guessed that dairy products are needed. We’re making ice cream, remember? In this case, you need heavy cream and whole milk. If you want a lighter ice cream, you can choose to use regular cream instead of heavy cream. Likewise, if you want ice cream that is richer and creamier, use half-and-half instead of whole milk. To make one quart of maple ice cream, you need one cup and a half of cream and one cup and a half of milk. You also need half a teaspoon of vanilla extract, three tablespoons of pure maple sugar, and a teaspoon of brown sugar. You may add in half a cup of chopped pecans if you want a bit of crunch in your ice cream.

If you chose to include the pecans, you need to brown them first in butter over a medium-high fire and then set them aside. In a mixing bowl, combine together the milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and brown sugar. As you may have noticed, this recipe does not require eggs; thus, you need not cook the mixture. It is all set to go in the freezer or ice cream maker. If you choose to use the freezer, you need to freeze the mixture twice. Put the mixture inside the freezer and once it has frozen, take it out and mash it again. Then, freeze it for the second time. The next time you take it out, it is ready to be devoured. If you prefer the ice cream maker, all you need to do is follow the instructions in the manual that came with it. At the same time, you might want to find recipes on maple sugar candy and create it for your families. Enjoy!
