At any festive event such as a carnival, a county fair or at an amusement park, chances are high that at some point in time during your day you will see a child walking around clutching a big swirl lollipop. The fact that they are so big and appear so delicious is what convinces a big eyed four or five year old that they absolutely need one. It is not just small children that enjoy the sweet treat however, older children and teens also enjoy swirly lollipops, most likely because they are so colorful and are a genuine novelty.
These candy swirl lollipops come in all sorts of flavors ranging from the classic cherry to watermelon, strawberry, peppermint and blue raspberry. They can also have multiple flavors, it all depends on what the candy maker decides to do. Swirl lollipops are made from a mixture of sugar, corn syrup, water and cream of tartar which is heated until the sugar completely dissolves. This makes up the base and will ultimately be the body of the lollipop. The next step is to take the candy mixture off the heat source and add the flavoring. Next, the candy maker divides this mixture into two separate parts and adds different colored food coloring.
Since the candy mixture is still sticky and slightly warm the candy maker can roll the different sections of color into long thin ropes and rolls them together to form a larger and larger rope depending on the desired size. These swirly lollipops can weight up to twenty-four ounces! After rolling them together and inserting a lollipop stick the candy maker will let them sit out in a pan until they are completely cold and firm to the touch. At this point they are ready to eat!
While buying these candy swirly lollipops remember that there really is no right or wrong choice. Go for the red, green, purple or blue swirl lollipop if you think that will make you happy. It all depends on you and what you feel like eating. Big swirly lollipops are a treat no matter who you are or what the occasion!
