Help Falling Asleep

by Flemin on June 23, 2010

One of the most nerve racking things is to not be able to fall asleep at night, especially if it is important that you be well rested. Whether it is because of a stressful day, racing thoughts, or too much caffeine, most people at one point have trouble falling asleep. Powerful and often times harmful sleeping pills should be the very last resort. Here are some tried and true tips to help you fall asleep.

1.) Try and get your room to be as soundproof as possible. The quieter your room is the more likely you are to fall asleep, stay asleep and enjoy quality sleep.

2.) Also, try and get your room as dark as possible. You are more likely to fall asleep in a room that is pitch black. Turn off all lights and light sources. Close any doors. If for whatever reason you cannot get your room pitch black, consider wearing a sleeping mask.

3.) Read before bed. Instead of watching television or being on your laptop, try reading a calming book. This will settle your mind and help clear out any intrusive thoughts that may keep you awake.

4.) One of the simplest ways to help yourself fall asleep is to make yourself as comfortable as possible. Try not to wear any tight clothing to bed. Make sure your pillows and bedding are as cozy as can be and try and find a position that you can relax in. If you are comfortable with it, sleeping nude can be one of the most relaxing things.

5.) Focusing on your breathing as well as meditating can help you drift off to sleep. Practice different breathing techniques while lying in bed. Meditate on a word, phrase or object that calms you. This will help to clear your mind and distract you from the stresses and worries of your day.

6.) Lastly, do not count sheep! This keeps your mind stimulated and active which is what you are trying to avoid. You want your mind relaxed and clear so you can drift off to sleep.

Some of these tips will work for better for others. Try a different one each night until you find one that works best for you. If worse comes to worse and you still cannot fall asleep easily at night, ask your doctor about an all natural, non-narcotic, sleeping aid.
