Desks are important pieces of furniture that can be found in any home. They come in many styles suited for many uses, and there are some that are simply multipurpose and can be used for anything.
Most people don’t put a lot of though into a desk, considering it simply just a table top for doing their homework, writing letters, using their computer or storing their junk. For some, just a kitchen table top is all they need and having a desk serves no real use, and that is fine. For others, however, having the perfect desk for each situation is essential. For me, space saving practicality and utility are the two most important aspects in choosing a desk, while style is not far behind.
A typical traditional desk is the secretary desk. These desks were usually hutch styled and tucked nicely out of the way against the wall of a room or even in a larger hallway. The desk portion itself was generally a hinged fold down cabinet door which revealed the writing utensils and paper, neatly stored out of site. The secretary desk of this style will have a number of drawers or storage cubby holes in the base as well as the hutch top. Even though letter writing is no longer commonly done with pen and paper, these units are still popular. If not for style alone, these desks provide a neat solution for hiding away a laptop computer or a small desktop PC.
Not to be confined to standing on the floor only, another type of desk that offers convenience and practicality is a bed desk. These units are small and light and are designed to straddle the user’s torso, while sitting up in bed. Having the adjustable slant desk top, the bed desk is handy for reading, writing and even using a laptop computer. Again, not to be confined to a bed only, a bed desk is often used while sitting in a chair or recliner. Laptops are a bit deceiving by name, as long term use on your actual lap can be very uncomfortable due to the heat. A bed desk can offer a realistic solution for using a laptop in bed or on your recliner.
