Making the Most of Limited Kitchen Space

by Flemin on February 8, 2010

There are a number of different things that can be done in order to make a small kitchen seem larger than it is, as well as make it a more workable, functional area of your home. While remodeling the kitchen will give you the best results, there are a number of different things you can do with more modest effort.

Downsize whatever you can. Did you know that most major appliances come in smaller versions that are designed to fit into smaller kitchens? From ovens that are built into the wall to combination microwave ovens / toaster ovens, downsizing your appliances will help a great deal at making the best use of your space.

Make the most of your storage options. While there is definitely a finite amount of fixed storage available in any kitchen, there are things that you can do to expand your storage space possibilities. Hanging baskets and shelves provide for additional space, as does mounting whatever you can on the walls.

Adjust your decorating style to create the illusion of a larger space. There are a few things that you can do to adjust your decorations to make even the smallest space seem larger than it is. The first thing to take care of is the lighting in your kitchen. Bright lights are known for helping create the illusion of a larger space, so what you need to do is open the curtains and let in as much light as possible. Combining this with a brightly-colored paint and plenty of artificial light can make a huge difference.

When you remodel a small kitchen, you are going to be able to completely design your kitchen to suit whatever specific needs you may have, though these tips can help you if you do not wish to go to quite that expense and effort. For more information, visit the Small Kitchen Remodel Guide.
