There are so many color schemes you could choose for your living room and so many ways you could get it wrong that you may be afraid to choose a color scheme at all. Here are some of the major pitfalls to avoid and a guide to how you can get it right:-
Not Having a Color Scheme
If you go into many homes you could be forgiven for thinking that a color scheme was not involved in putting the living room together. In fact most living rooms are like that. There is no plan upfront and there never was a sample board of colors. Such rooms simply grow with one item being added at a time with no thought for overall coordination. If you are thinking about color schemes you are at least half way there.
Using Different Color Families
Colors belong to different color groups. There are warm colors like cream, yellow and orange and cool colors like white, blue, gray and lilac. There are also families such as naturals or heritage which you will find on the paint charts. If you stick with one color family you are more likely to get a color scheme which works.
Being Too Bright
A living room is usually a place to relax so an overpowering color scheme is generally not a good idea unless bright colors are the colors that relax you (and everyone else who lives in your home). Too dark is not a good idea either. Think how that navy blue or dark green scheme would look on a summer day. In general natural and neutral colors are best for major elements in the room such as sofas, walls and flooring and you can add color with curtains, window valances and other accessories.
Not Using Impact Colors
Don’t try and make everything neutral otherwise your room will have no focal point or impact. A hot pink throw added to a sofa, a colored vase and a trimming on a plain valance and curtain can make all the difference to how your room is perceived.
