Insurance Sales: Making Money On The Side

by Flemin on July 22, 2010

Insurance sales is one of the best side jobs in the world.  Thousands of people are moonlighting selling insurance.  Many are making a good part-time income while others end up making enough money to go into it full-time.

Selling insurance on the side is great because it has very low barrier to entry.  All you do is take a week-long course to get your life and health license.  Most insurance agencies will hire pretty easily, especially in cases where it’s commission only to start and usually to stay.

It is also doable part-time.  There are many jobs that require your full attention, especially at first.  This is one of those few opportunities where you don’t have to quit your day job to make money.

In fact, when you start out, it will most likely be in life insurance, which is generally a consumer product.  That means most of your work will happen at night, after normal business hours.  It will also involve meeting people in their homes, which again you can’t do if they are at work during the day.

Selling insurance can also lead to other financial advising jobs as well.  In fact, insurance is essentially a financial product.  It’s not a difficult crossover to selling securities, stocks and commodities.  If you are successful with insurance, you can advance to those other products as well.

The great advantage to this is that when you are ready to sell financial products, you have a book of business that will be ready to be called on when you have something new to offer them.  If they have bought insurance from you, they will certainly buy investment products from you as well.

Selling insurance is both an inside and outside sales job so you will need to be prepared for that.  That means you need a phone line with unlimited calling.  You also need internet and a computer.  You will also need a car for transportation.
