How To Build A Pig Pen

by Flemin on April 25, 2010

Pigs, like any other animal, deserve a home that gives them adequate living space, provides shelter, and access to food and water. The size of the pen depends on how many pigs will be living inside it, as well as the average size of the pigs. In this article, we will discuss building a pig pen for adult pigs.

There are several different types of pens available for construction, some permanent and some meant to be temporary holding pens. We’re going to look at a permanent pen that can last throughout a pig’s entire life. The first important aspect of your pig pen is how many animals it is going to house. If you aren’t sure, then it’s best to play it safe and build with enough space for two or three extra pigs. You should leave a space of 8 feet by 16 feet for each animal depending on the breed. If you are raising them to be butchered, you should also keep in mind how big they are going to get.

Pens need to be incredibly strong as pigs are feisty and powerful animals. Even the most tame and friendly pet pigs will still use the fence to scratch against and bump up against. Wooden or metal posts are the best bets, although wood could get chewed through. Posts should be six feet tall so that two of those feet can be put into the ground.

The fence itself can be made out of wood, pre-made wire panels, or panels of aluminum pipe. Wire panels, better known as hog panels, are the most widely popular choice as they won’t be chewed like with wood and they won’t rust like in the aluminum pipe. Hog panels are cheap, maintenance-free and are easy to set up by attaching to fence posts either with sturdy wire or a combination of wire and wood staples if you have wooden posts.
