Every equestrian in the world knows that once you’ve found the perfect horse there is only one more question you need to answer: how do you find the perfect saddle?
For starters, the saddle has to fit your horse. If your horse is feeling uncomfortable or irritated – or even worse, is in actual physical pain – then the saddle has to go. In this, equine comfort is the first and most important goal.
But it’s not the only goal! The other part of the saddlery equation is you, the rider. And in the same way that your horse needs to be safe and comfortable with its saddle, so do you. A horse saddle that works for the horse but not the rider is not the perfect saddle!
Ideally, your feelings about your saddle are going to be similar to what Goldilocks felt when she sampled Baby Bear’s porridge. It’s got to be perfect, just right! If the saddle is too small then you are going to feel like you are being pinched on the horse’s back.
On the other hand, a saddle that’s too big is going to leave you afloat on it – you’ll literally drift back and forth like a boat on a windy tide. Your horse is moving, all its muscles are flexing, and it’s back can feel like a rippling ocean – especially when she starts to canter or trot. The last thing you want is to spend the whole ride frantically clinging to the reins so as not to fall off.
And you know what? Your horse doesn’t want that either.
So here are a few tips on choosing the right saddle. Once it fits the horse, climb up into it yourself. Give yourself a moment to settle into it. Take a few deep breaths. Does it feel good to you? Are you perched just right? It’s okay to trust your body and your gut on this one.
Next, see if you can slide your hand between you and the cantle the saddle seat’s back). Your hand should fit in snugly but comfortably.
Once you’ve got the right horse, your saddle may be the best investment you can make in your riding pleasure. Take your time and don’t rush – you and horse will be glad you did!
