To me, nothing in this world is more beautiful than a gorgeous Shih Tzu dog in a perfect show coat, preened and polished like fine art. These guys are amazing to behold, and even more breathtaking if they possess the sporting dog type movement that this breed is known throughout the dog fancy for. If you wish to achieve Shih Tzu nirvana or if you just want your pet to look nicer at home take a look at our tips here to get you a start.
The Top Knot and Coat
This is usually what frustrates most Shih Tzu owners the most, and for sure that huge show top knot can be a real bugger. But few people know that this is actually a series of five or more ponytails held in place by six or more rubber bands which are hidden under a large, flashy, show bow. Pretty amazing when you thing about it, but the trick to a great show coat in general is excellent maintenance so keep at it and you will most likely get there with any Shih Tzu. I do my at home Shih Tzu dogs in pigtails which look really cute and it is good at keeping the hair out of their faces for me, and they can bite faces, chase, and have fun in them without much fuss and trouble. They do get used to the rubber bands, and will quite rubbing at them if you get serious about making them leave the pig tails alone. Quality dog food is also a must for great hair quality, Royal Canine is what my dogs eat, I like the Shih Tzu chow they produce. I think it is worth the small fortune it costs, sometimes I think I spend more on their food than mine!
