Like any other companies, the Banfield animal hospital also had its humble beginnings. The company was founded by Warren J. Weggert through his efforts of providing human-quality medical care to pets. By 1987, Scott Campbell bought the veterinary hospital, which during that time was earning a whopping $2 million in revenues annually.
Several years after, Medical Management Inc. was constituted to run the said veterinary clinic. And in 1994, a pet store chain named PetSmart teamed up with MMI. The partnership between MMI and PetSmart paved the way for the opening of pet clinics in PetSmart stores, which were initially called as VetSmart.
Not long after, the company has grown immensely from just a few clinics to over 150 branches in over 18 US states. As part of the deal between the two companies, PetSmart owned a part of the shares of MMI while also receiving a portion of the clinics’ overall profit. But by 2000, Banfield officially acquired some of PetSmart’s clinics, which carried the name PetSmart Veterinary Services. Since then, the company went through a number of management turnovers but the Banfield animal hospital continued providing excellent veterinary services to their fast growing client base.
