The Proper Puppy Pen Introduction

by Flemin on April 2, 2010

The world as seen through the eyes of a young canine is very different from how we see it. That means many curiosities may entice your new furry friend to play with things that he should not. In order to keep him safe, you must make sure he does not have access to dangerous household items. The best way to do this is to utilize a puppy pen.

Make sure you start off on the right foot when confining your puppy. If you approach it incorrectly, you might encourage fear or other negative habits that can worsen as he ages. Before placing him in a kennel or dog play pen, let him sniff the new item. Never shove or force your puppy in. The experience should be kept as positive as possible.

When he approaches the dog pen, praise him to let him know that this is a good thing. Consider offering a treat if he should venture inside on his own. It is not recommended to give a dog treat each time otherwise he will come to expect it. Instead, use only praise or switch between the two. Also remember, as you praise, do not become overly excited. Remain enthusiastic but do so calmly, or you may work your pup into a frenzy and the point of the training may be lost.

Never use your puppy play pen as a means to punish your dog. Like if he misses hitting the target when using a potty training puppy pad. It may be frustrating but the last thing you want to do is have him associate the pen with a negative reaction. Instead, keep it positive and calm. You should strive to make him want to enter the pen, even on his own. Never force your dog, and avoid loud sounds or fast movements during the introduction period. In time, he will come to accept the pen and even enjoy spending time in his safely confined environment!
