Learn To Make Your Marriage Work

by Flemin on May 20, 2010

It seems that more and more couples enter into marriage with the thought “if it doesn’t work out we can get a divorce”. Divorce statistics bear out the fact that many of these marriages do end in divorce. What if couples instead entered into the marriage with the thought “we can make it work”.

One fact that needs to be understood by both partners in the marriage is that there are no “perfect marriages”. A perfect marriage only exists in fairy tales, TV shows and movies. In any type of relationship, problems will crop up from time to time. Marriage is no different, you will face problems, you will have disagreements, you will disappoint each other sometimes.

Couples in successful marriages learn to deal effectively with the problems that occur. They learn to forgive their spouse for mistakes. They learn how to communicate and negotiate and compromise. All of these actions help the couple to have a successful marriage despite having problems.

Couples who cannot communicate effectively face greater problems than couples who are able to communicate well. In fact, breakdowns in communication often make other problems worse. Think about it, it’s really hard to deal with something if you cannot talk to each other in a calm and courteous manner.

If you can communicate calmly, with no finger pointing, name calling or blaming the other, you can work together to negotiate a solution to the problem.

The art of compromise is probably one of most important skills that couples can develop. Compromise means that both partners will give a little and find a place in the middle that they can both agree on.

While divorce may be the answer in some situations, most of the time problems in the marriage can be worked through and the marriage can be saved from divorce. Professional counseling is often needed to help couples learn these vital skills.

It does takes more work to repair the relationship than it does to walk away, but it is worth the effort.
